Shutter Styles

To ensure that we are able to offer a shutter suitable for all applications, we provide a huge range of
shutter styles/ installation types. Broadly, the shutter styles fall into seven categories: Full Height
Shutters, Tier on Tier Shutters, Cafe Style Shutters, Bay Window Shutters, Special Shaped Shutters,
Door & Wardrobe Shutters and Tracked Shutters. We are confident here at Brighton Plantation
Shutters that we can offer a shutter style/ type suitable for any installation.

Full Height

A full height installation is one where the shutter panel(s) literally cover the full height of the window, without a ‘tier-on-tier’ split.
Adding a mid-rail allows you to tilt separate sections of the shutter, controlling the light to get the levels to suit your needs. A mid-rail also means that you can keep the lower section closed, providing privacy, while the top section remains open, allowing natural light to filter in through the louvres.
As with all our plantation shutters, you can opt for a visible tilt rod, providing a classic look, or you can choose to have a hidden tilt rod, giving your shutter a simple, more contemporary look.

Tier on Tier

For bathrooms, bedrooms, and living rooms, or anywhere you would like unlimited control over the light and privacy in the room – the ability to move panels and louvres independently could be just what you’re after. The tier-on-tier style is ideal for maximising the light in the room during the daytime, but with the option to have privacy in the evening.

If you’re looking to emphasise a beautiful Victorian sash window, tier-on-tier shutters help complete the look and also provide easy access to open or close your windows.

Café

Unlike our full height plantation shutters, the beauty of café style is that they only cover the bottom half of the window. So even with added privacy for your home, you can still enjoy the light filtering into your home.

If you want to accentuate your existing window features, such as stained glass or period style architraves, then café style shutters are the choice for you; only covering the lower part of the window they’re ideal for this purpose, as well as providing easy access for operating sash windows.

Bay Window

Bay windows are designed to make the most of sunlight in your home, and plantation shutters help you get the light levels just right, whatever the time of day.

Helping you show off the architectural features of your bay, our shutters are made-to-measure and crafted for the unique angles and sizes of the bay itself, maximising your room space and available light. Bay windows can be installed with any of the panel styles above.

Special Shapes

Having an irregular shaped window or opening requires something a bit more unique. Our plantation shutters suit all window shapes, no matter how curved or angled, small or large. Whether a triangle, arch or circle, the shape of the window or opening itself will dictate which material choices are available.

Shaped shutters are usually measured by taking a template of the window, so that the factory is able to produce shutters that are an exact match for the size and style of your shaped window.

Door & Wardrobe

Unlike a shutter for windows, the primary function of wardrobe shutters is not light control, but stylishly concealing the cupboard or wardrobe space. The shutters can be set up with louvres or as solid panel shutters. If you don’t need to tilt the louvres, you can opt to have them fixed in position.

As with all our shutters, the door and wardrobe shutters are fully customisable and have the option of the louvres running the full height of the door, or half solid panel and half louvred.

Panel Configurations

Single Panel

One single window shutter panel situated within the frame, hinged left or right.

A good example of this would be a small single window shutters installation.

Bi-fold Panels

This is the name we give to two shutter panels hinged together. When opened the two married plantation shutters fold at the hinged joint.

Multi-fold Panels

The maximum amount of panels we can hinge together without utilising a tracking system is four, depending on the shutter material chosen. Lighter hardwoods enable you to have more hinged panels, unlike heavier MDF and PVC.

Louvres & Tilt Rods

Louvres – Louvres – We offer five standard louvre sizes; 47mm, 63mm, 76mm, 89mm & 114mm, which are available in any of our materials. Tilt rods control the movement of the louvres. We offer three types of tilt rod; Front mounted, Clearview and Hidden Tilt

Front Tilt Rod – This is a traditional set up, where the visible tilt rod is mounted on the front of the
louvres. This can either be centrally mounted on the louvres, or offset to one side. The louvres are
opened or closed by moving the rod up or down.

Clearview – This is a discreet rod mounted at the edge of the louvres, on the back of the panel. It is a way of achieving the contemporary appearance of the hidden tilt system, yet without any additional expense.

Hidden – This is a more contemporary tilt system, where rather than a visible rod, the hidden tilt
controls the louvres by a mechanism within the stiles of the panel itself, meaning that if you tilt one, the others move with it. For shutters with a mid-rail or tier-on-tier split, the different sections are still operated separately, as with the visible tilt rod option
